Chapter 16
More Than I Can Give
âI missed you so much, Dru. Itâs been a long week without you,â Raven said once they were inside of her bedroom.
She folded herself inside of Druâs embrace. He held her silently for a while, his mind conflicted. He wanted to just lose himself in her embrace, but he felt uneasy.
âRaven, what is she doing here? I thought we agreed that you were going to take a step backâ¦put some space between you and her for the time being.â
âDru, please. She just kind of showed up and one thing led to another.â
âSee, thatâs what Iâm talking about. Youâve got to set some rules, Raven. She just canât pop up into your life, your home, whenever she wants.â
Druâs annoyance caused his tone to sound strained and he fought to control the rising volume of his voice.
âBaby, itâs late and itâs been a long day. Letâs talk about this tomorrow,â Raven said, moving away from him wearily.
She went into the roomâs master bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face. She took an extra minute to floss and to apply an astringent to her face. When she returned to the bedroom, she did not make eye contact with Dru immediately. She pulled the T-shirt she was wearing over her head and slid her sweatpants down, kicking them away from her. Picking up the sweatpants and T-shirt, she tossed them onto the ottoman in the corner of the room. She pulled a black nightgown from a dresser drawer and slipped it over her head. She turned around to find that Dru was still standing where sheâd left him, his back leaning against the closed bedroom door.
âDru?â
âWhat?â
âCome on, Dru. Are you going to stand there all night? Please come to bed,â Raven said.
Dru bit his tongue. It took every ounce of inner strength and restraint for him to do so. He undressed slowly and when he was down to his boxers, he sat on the side of Ravenâs bed. He silently wished he had just stayed at his home when heâd gotten in from the airport or at least called her before coming over. But he had been so intent on seeing her, so in need of her touch. Wanting to hold her in his arms had driven him to wrap up his business earlier than scheduled and hop on the first available flight back east. Heâd wanted to surprise her. He thought briefly of the necklace heâd bought for her that was tucked inside his jacket pocket. The mood had been ruined, so the necklace would have to wait.
Dru felt Ravenâs arms envelop him from behind. He closed his eyes, blocking out the unsettled emotions that warred within him. He gave in to what he craved. Her touch was enough to soothe the most savage of beasts. He slid into bed beside her.
âI love you, Raven,â he said.
Raven understood the deeper meaning of his simple declaration. He was worried about her. He also was telling her that he had no intentions of sitting back and allowing anyone to hurt her.
